Indio CHP office to offer “Age Well, Drive Smart” training for senior drivers

Riverside County seniors who want to fine-tune their driving techniques and ensure they’re “safe and confident on the road” are being invited to participate in the California Highway Patrol’s “Age Well,
Drive Smart” program, available in Temecula and other CHP stations.

“Giving senior drivers the tools they need to continue to be safe drivers is not only important to the safety of the motoring public, but also for seniors to maintain their independence,” CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow said.
“Our senior driving course affords the continued education that can benefit seniors, helping to ensure they enjoy safe driving well into their golden years.”

Age Well, Drive Smart classes help drivers perform self-assessments on their capabilities and whether they should travel at certain times and in certain locations, according to the CHP.

The two-hour seminars also highlight various portions of the California Vehicle Code, driving techniques and natural changes in physiology with the onset of advancing years.

The CHP decided to make the programs available because many drivers “65 years and older look to the California Highway Patrol for assistance in maintaining or improving their ability to drive,” according to an agency statement.

Anyone interested in signing up should contact their local CHP station, including those in Beaumont, Indio, Riverside or Temecula. More information is available at www.chp.ca.gov.
