Notorious jewel thief Doris Payne arrested yet again

A notorious jewel thief who has made headlines across the country for her crimes, including the Coachella Valley, has been arrested yet again, according to the Atlanta Journal.

Doris Payne, 86, was arrested Tuesday for trying to steal a $2,000 diamond necklace from a Von Maur department store in the Perimeter Mall in Dunwoody, Georgia, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. Payne allegedly slipped the necklace into her back pocket and tried to leave the store, Dunwoody police told the newspaper.

She has stolen about $2 million worth of jewelry over the last six decades and reflected on her crimes in a documentary called, ‘The Life and Crimes of Doris Payne’, in 2013.

Payne made local news in the Coachella Valley when she swiped a $22,500 diamond-and-white-gold ring from El Paseo Jewelers in Palm Desert in November 2013.

October 27, 2015 was the last time Payne was arrested in Atlanta for stealing high-end jewelry. She was busted after slipping a pair of earrings into her pokcet at a Christian Dior store inside Saks Fifth Avenue at Phipps Plaza. The earrings were worth $690.

A loss prevention specialist reported that he saw her on surveillance video, according to police.

At the time, Payne was wanted in North Carolina after Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said she stole a $33,000 David Yurman engagement ring from a local mall. She still has not been arrested in connection with that incident, police said.

The Atlanta-Journal Constitution reported that Payne is in the DeKalb County Jail on a charge of theft by shoplifting, according to records.
