Home switches lights back on following protest over vandalism on Candy Cane Lane

Update:

Via Facebook, homeowner John Elliott writes:

“Thank you all for your thoughts, DUE TO THE OVERWHELMING REQUEST FROM PEOPLE TO TURN OUR LIGHTS BACK ON. WE WILL !!! IN FACT, WE WILL HAVE SOME SPECIAL MOUSE VISITORS HERE THIS WEEKEND FOR PHOTO OPS.”

Original story:

Expensive holiday decorations were stolen for the ninth time in 28 years, prompting one of the “founding families” of the famed Candy Cane Lane in Cathedral City to turn off the lights at their elaborate display.

Many people took time to stop at the property Monday night and read a post by the owners explaining why the home on Minerva Lane wasn’t lit.

Visitors said they were shocked that someone would steal from someone trying to share Christmas cheer.

“It’s not in the spirit in Christmas at all,” said Erica Delaney, visiting the display from Philadelphia. “It’s disappointing because I’m sure its not that somebody is selling the decorations. It’s an act of vandalism, is what it is. “

The homeowners say they’re protesting the vandals by going dark, and that they may or may not light up again this season, but that their cane will remain lighted in the spirit of the event.

“It’s a shame,” said Delaney.
