One driver dead in crash on HWY 62 Tuesday night

Accident on Highway 62 in Morongo Valley leaves one driver dead.

An unidentified female driver is dead following two collisions in the span of half-an-hour Tuesday night. Authorities are saying she was driving under the influence.

Morongo Basin CHP said that a female driving a red Toyota collided with another vehicle at 8:50 p.m. on Highway 62 at Park Avenue in Morongo Valley. The driver of the red Toyota failed to exchange information and fled the scene of the accident.

The red Toyota continued eastbound on Highway 62 and made a right turn onto souhbound North Star trail. For reasons unknown at this time, the red Toyota made a U-turn and traveled back northbound on North Star Trail towards Highway 62.

At approximately 9:20 p.m., a female driver, male passenger, and toddler, were traveling eastbound on Highway 62, in the #1 lane, in a silver colored Jeep at approximately 60 MPH. The red Toyota failed to yield the right of way to oncoming traffic and the front of the Jeep collided into the driver side of the red Toyota.

The occupants of the Jeep did not sustain any injuries. The driver of the red Toyota was transported to Desert Regional Medical Center where she was pronounced dead Wednesday morning.

After the second collision, officers determined the driver of the red Toyota to be under the combined influence of alcohol and drugs. These collisions are currently under investigation.
