76-year-old man killed in big rig crash on I-10 identified

Riverside County Corners have identified the 76-year-old man from Lodi, California killed in a big rig crash on Wednesday as Carl Vogt.

Officers with the California Highway Patrol said Vogt died after crashing an International big rig tractor while hauling a trailer on westbound I-10 near Desert Center Wednesday morning.

The crash was reported at about 5:30 a.m. east of Dillon Road.

Officer Mike Radford said the man allowed the vehicle to drift off the left side of the road and the tractor moved into the center divider, striking a raised dirt embankment. The vehicle traveled up the embankment and went over a peak, where it came to a rest, partially down a descending embankment.

The man was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center where he later died. The Riverside County Coroner’s Office is expected to release the man’s identity in the near future. KESQ and CBS Local 2 will keep you updated as that happens.

A Hazmat team responded to the collision due to fuel and oil spilling into the center divider. The left two lanes of westbound I-10 were closed for two hours in order to remove the vehicle from the center divider.

The crash is still under investigation. Alcohol and/or drugs didn’t appear to be a factor, according to Officer Radford’s release.
