Border Patrol finds 26 pounds of meth hidden in man’s SUV
A 37-year-old man was busted by Border Patrol agents at the Highway 86 checkpoint Wednesday morning after a canine alerted to the man’s SUV, revealing nearly 27 pounds of methamphetamine hidden in the vehicle’s quarter panels.
Authorities said the man, a legal permanent resident of the United States, was stopped at about 9 a.m. He was referred to the secondary inspection where a canine alerted agents to the side of his Tahoe.
Agents said they found 20 packages of methamphetamine hidden in the SUVs quarter panels. The narcotics weighed 26.76 pounds and is estimated to have a street value of $85,632.
“Criminal organizations are constantly working to defeat our detection techniques,” said Assistant Chief Patrol Agent David S. Kim. “This is great work performed by Border Patrol agents who diligently safeguard our communities from the dangers of drugs.”
The man is now being investigated by the Drug Enforcement Agency.
Agents said since October 1, 2016, El Centro Sector agents have seized more than 505.37 pounds of methamphetamine.
