Desert boasts best wildflower bloom in two decades

Everyone is buzzing about this year’s wildflower season. Our wet winter is making for a beautiful spring and there’s no better place to check out this year’s bloom than at the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park.

The Visit California website said this is the biggest bloom in two decades. People from all over California stopped to take pictures of the super bloom.

“Well, we heard about the wildflowers. It’s the time of year that they bloom. A lot of our friends are posting on Facebook and they’ve got some beautiful pictures and we wanted to get in on it,” said Scott Rice, of San Diego.

Some people are even taking a wildflower tour of sorts.

“Went to the poppies in Lake Elsinor and then we went to Joshua Tree. So just out exploring for two days while I’m off,” said Nancy Smytka, of Los Angeles.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department is asking drivers to visit the area during the week because crowds on the weekends are causing traffic problems.
The more than 200 flowering plant species are certainly living up to the hype. While much of the country is getting hammered with snow, the area is enjoying temperatures in the 90s.

“Well, it was 80 degrees and now it’s 94. So the area is beautiful. The flowers are gorgeous, but the heat is killing us,” said Jack Nace, of Pennsylvania.

Our wet winter is the reason for all of this color. If you haven’t gotten down to see the flowers, don’t worry. The peak season goes from early March to early April.

The Sheriff’s Department is putting out a traffic alert Sunday saying if you plan on visiting during a weekend, expect traffic delays up to several hours on roads leading in and out of Borrego Springs. Click here to view the full alert.
