Palm Springs City Council approves vacation rental ordinance

The Palm Springs City Council approved a vacation rental ordinance on Wednesday night.

Palm Springs Mayor Robert Moon voted no and Chris Mills abstained from the vote.

“Our job is to come up with a policy that we think will work and to give it a chance. If it is not working, one way or another, we have said from the beginning we are open to making changes,” said Councilmember Geoff Kors.

Members of the public made hours of comments and questions to the planing commission before the meeting.

Vacation homes can be rented up to 36 times a year if four of those rentals are in the summer. If not, the cap is set at 32 rentals a year.

Owners with multiple properties are grandfathered in and can keep their permits, but new owners will only be allowed to operate one.

If there is a problem with noise the city’s vacation rental enforcement department will be dispatched instead of the city contacting the property owner.

On Monday, the group Protect Our Neighborhoods filed a lawsuit to stop the city from continuing to give out vacation rental permits.

“Their priority today is to ramrod through that ordinance which is a watered down version of the ordinance that we all compromised on,” said Mike Ziskind, Spokesperson Protect our Neighborhoods.

The group protect is waiting on what a judge’s decision for future rental permits.
