Dog taken for grooming, owner says picked up with injuries

A pet owner said her miniature schnauzer, Pepper, got a close cut with the groomer when her dog came home with blood shot, hemorrhaged eyes. She shared her story to warn other owners.

“When I got home she wasn’t really acting like herself. She went off to the corner,” Dylenia Garcia said.

Garcia said she took Pepper to get groomed at the La Quinta PetSmart Saturday.

She said after she picked her up and got home, something was wrong.

“She wasn’t really jumping. She’s pretty spunky and energetic for a puppy and I noticed some red tint in her eyes,” Garcia said.

Garcia said she immediately called her veterinarian and brought Pepper in.

In the medical report, the veterinarian says Pepper had engorged and blood shot eyes, with ruptured blood vessels. The report notes that the veterinarian could not determine how it happened but it occurred after some sort of trauma.

Garcia said she was lucky the veterinarian sent her home with only eye drops to bring down the inflammation in Pepper’s eye. When she contacted PetSmart, she said she got the runaround.

“I went back and told the two managers what had occurred. They pulled out the groomer, she swore she didn’t do anything wrong, she swore she didn’t leave the grooming salon like that,” Garcia said.

We reached out to PetSmart which sent us a statement that said “Nothing is more important than the health and safety of pets, and an internal investigation is underway. We are actively gathering more information to better understand what happened, and we will remain in contact with Pepper’s pet parents as we learn more.”

Garcia said while she’s happy to see Pepper slowly get back to her old self, she has concerns.

“I just want them to be aware of what happened and to make sure it never happens again,” Garcia said.

After we made contact with PetSmart, Garcia said she got a call from her veterinarian saying PetSmart paid her vet bill of about $100. Garcia said managers at the La Quinta Petsmart told her they will review what happened on Wednesday.
