Indio PD works to reduce traffic pressure for Coachella Festival

How to avoid road closures for Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival

The Indio Police Department is working on ways to reduce traffic pressure on city roads during the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival. One area of concern is the Jefferson Street Interchange project, which police are afraid may cause some confusion to festival goers headed to the venue.

Sgt. Dan Marshall said officers plan to block off a couple of streets at the Jefferson Street Interchange as people arrive to the festival. He said when people are leaving the festival, the 270 loop will be open to get onto the mainline for northbound traffic, to continue to flow throughout the evening.

Street signs are in place to direct traffic as people arrive, and leave the festival.

Sgt. Marshall said officers are excited to be able to take advantage of this and it should reduce traffic congestion in the city during the morning after the festival concludes.

Sgt. Marshall said officers are also working to make it easier for campers arriving on Thursday. He said it’s Spring Break for some colleges so authorities are expecting higher-than-normal loading to occur at the campground. Officers were at the campground Thursday at 4 a.m. to handle anything that comes their way, according to police.

KESQ and CBS Local 2 will continue to deliver traffic updates as the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival and Stagecoach Country Music Festival take place this month.
