Students return to North Park Elementary one week after fatal shooting

Students returned to North Park Elementary School in San Bernardino Monday, exactly a week after a fatal shooting on campus left three people dead and one student injured. Karen Smith, a special needs teacher, and 8-year-old Jonathan Martinez, one of her students, died after being shot by Cedric Anderson, Smith’s estranged husband. Anderson killed himself shortly after. 9-year-old Nolan Brandy was injured in the shooting and was released from the hospital Friday. The San Bernardino City Unified School District shut down the school last week after the shooting and installed additional security measures on campus. The measures included a new camera alert system that allows someone in the front office to see who buzzes in at the front door. A more secure system that collects identifying information of anyone that enters campus will eventually be put in place. A memorial honoring Smith and Martinez grew along the corner of H Street and Northpark Boulevard from the traffic signal to further down the street. The school district will hold a press conference at 1 p.m. at the Board of Education building in downtown San Bernardino. Stay with News Channel 3 and CBS Local 2 for the latest updates.
