Friends of CV Link stand in support for cyclist safety

More than 30 cyclists stood their ground in front of Palm Springs City Hall Wednesday to show their support for the construction of 16 miles of pathway within city limits.

Cyclists were with the group Friends of CV Link. Organizers of the event said this pathway would promote bicycle safety by taking more cyclists off the streets as well as promote cycling tourism in the area.

A regularly scheduled City Council meeting took place inside while supporters stood outside with signs and bicycles. Cyclists did not address city council or go into the meeting.

In a statement, City Councilman Geoff Kors said,” The overwhelming majority of residents I have spoken with strongly support the CV Link. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity to create an amazing recreation area open to tourists and residents that will bring more visitors to our city and increase our reputation as a sustainability leader.”

In response to the turnout, Palm Springs City Councilman J.R. Roberts said,” The CV Link is very doable. I am in disagreement with the Mayor’s (Robert Moon) Decision on this. The master plans envisions bathrooms and water fountains and maybe it could be more looked at as how we maintain hiking trails which would reduce cost on maintenance.”

Roberts said maintenance of the 16 mile pathway is what is causing concern.

“M aintenance is a red herring that can be solved. That is no reason to not move forward on an amazing recreational opportunity,” Roberts said.

We reached out to Mayor Moon but did not receive comment.

The CV Link is a 50-mile project that would connect eight Coachella Valley cities and two federally recognized tribe land to serve as a pathway for bicyclists, pedestrians and electric vehicles as an alternative route.
