Deputies seek armed carjacker who stole senior citizen’s car in Indio

Sheriff’s deputies are asking for the public’s help in locating a man who carjacked a senior citizen at gunpoint in Indio Wednesday night.

The carjacking occurred at 7:35 p.m. Wednesday in the parking lot of the Maclin Open Air Market at Arabia Street and Dr. Carreon Boulevard.

According to sheriff’s Sgt. Andrew Nielsen, a man in his mid-20s approached the 74-year-old victim as he was getting into his car. The suspect pulled a handgun and demanded the car. Once given the keys, he drove westbound through the parking lot, Nielsen said.

The victim described the suspect as a dark-skinned Hispanic man, about 6-foot-1, with a thin build. He was wearing a blue bandanna partially covering his face and dark clothing. The car was described as a gray 2013 Toyota Corolla, California license plate 6ZRC322.

Anyone with information was asked to contact Investigator Lisandro Tijerina of the Thermal sheriff’s station at (760) 863-8990 or the Coachella Valley Crime Stoppers at (760) 341-7867 to report anonymously.
