Palm Springs apartments red tagged for 2 weeks following fire

Palm Springs firefighters quickly put out a fire in an apartment Thursday night. But the residents evacuated from that apartment may not be able to return to their homes for two weeks due to the building being red tagged on Friday.

According to Batallion Chief David Reese, firefighters were called to the fire on the second story of an apartment complex near the intersection of Ramon and Sunrise. When firefighters arrived, flames and smoke were visible from the balcony.

Crews quickly extinguished the fire shortly after they arrived on scene.

Crews were able to contain the fire to one apartment. There was some smoke damage to the apartment above it, but all the smoke was cleared. The building is also without power.

No injuries were reported. The American Red Cross is assisting about 40 people who are now out of a place to stay. Residents were given hotel vouchers but many don’t know where they can stay because all of the hotels are booked for people attending the White Party this weekend.

Police closed roads on S Sunrise Way near E Ramon & Baristo while fighting the fire.

Crews on the scene said there’s no reason to suspect criminal activity at this time.
