PSPD Chief Reyes talks about ‘watering down’ of justice system

Palm Springs Police Chief Bryan Reyes was the keynote speaker at a memorial ceremony honoring fallen California law enforcement officers in Sacramento on Monday morning. Governor Jerry Brown also spoke at the ceremony.

Chief Reyes was met with a standing ovation after he talked about the ‘watering down’ of our criminal justice system.

KESQ News Channel 3 and CBS Local 2’s Katie Widner and Photojournalist Dante Walker were at the event. Fallen Palm Springs police officers Lesley Zerebny and Jose Gilbert “Gil” Vega were honored at the State Capitol during the ceremony.

The names of two Palm Springs police officers, Lesley Zerebny and Jose Gil Vega, were added to the monument this weekend. They were shot and killed in October while responding to a domestic disturbance. Monday morning’s ceremonies included a memorial procession for law enforcement vehicles, a Walk of Honor for department representatives and immediate family members of officers being enrolled, and the Enrollment Ceremony, where the names of newly enrolled officers are formally added to the California Peace Officers Memorial Monument.

8 other California officers who died in the line of duty will also be honored at the ceremony including: Tulare County Sheriff’s Deputy Scott Ballantyne , CHP Gold Area Officer Nathan Taylor , San Jose Police Department Officer Michael Katherman , San Diego Police Officer Jonathan “JD” De Guzman , Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Sergeant Steve Owen , Modoc County Sheriff’s Deputy Jack Hopkins , Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Sergeant Alfonso Lopez , Stanislaus County Deputy Sheriff Dennis Wallace .
