Mexican Mother’s Day gifts have flower shops’ sales in full bloom

Mother’s Day spending has flower shops’ sales in full bloom.

“Holidays like this are so important because that’s what we thrive on,” co-owner of Coachella Valley Floral Distributors Sharon Gonzalez said.

The owners of Coachella Valley Floral Distributors in Thousand Palms have been up and running since 2 a.m. on Wednesday, getting flowers from Los Angeles to fulfill their Mexican Mother’s Day orders.

“It’s been chaos! We learned very quickly from Valentine’s Day that it’s going to be chaos, but in a good way, so we’ve been preparing for the last maybe week or so just getting everything ready so we have everything at our hands,” co-owner of Coachella Valley Floral Distributors Cheryl Gonzales said.

Four generations of florists are turning a new leaf with their business. They spent the day cutting, arranging and preparing flowers for people to give, and customers are happy to pay up.

“I do it for my friends because my mom just passed away a year ago exactly and it’s a very nice thing to do because we always appreciate it,” Angie Torres of Cathedral City said.

“I want her to like the flowers and to feel special,” Marcelina Maciel of Coachella said.

According to the National Retail Federation, flowers are the second most common gift on Mother’s Day and they estimate people will spend more than $2.6 billion on flowers alone this year. That number is what flower shops are banking on.

“I’ll probably be here pretty late but afterward I’ll probably go home and relax. But I have to get ready for next Mother’s Day, so there’s not really much time to relax. I have to go back to Los Angeles in the morning,” Gonzalez said.

Mexican Mother’s day is celebrated on May 10.

Mother’s day is this Sunday, May 14.
