Suspect detained after allegedly stabbing man in chest at CV Rescue Mission

A man was stabbed twice on Tuesday at an Indio homeless shelter, and a fellow transient was taken into custody and booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.

Anthony Edward Sanchez, 20, of Riverside, was arrested following the attack that occurred around noon at the Coachella Valley Rescue Mission, located at 47470 Van Buren St. The unidentified victim was hospitalized with non-life threatening stab wounds to the chest and abdomen, according to Indio police Sgt. Director Darla Burkett said Tuesday’s stabbing is the first time anything like this has occurred at the Coachella Valley Rescue Mission.

Sanchez, who was initially detained as a person of interest, was later arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. Marshall said both men were clients of the homeless shelter.

Director Burkett said the victim was from Texas and was staying in their transitory shelter. She believes some sort of altercation took place outside the shelter and the suspect then entered the building and stabbed the victim.

Officers continue to investigate the stabbing. KESQ News Channel 3 and CBS Local 2 will deliver updates as the stabbing investigation continues.
