KESQ and CBS Local 2’s Jeremy Chen was at John’s Restaurant Wednesday morning to learn more about how his friends at the restaurant will be remembering him in the wake of his tragic death.
When the doors open in the morning at John’s, it means it’s breakfast time. It’s also where staff and regulars always expect a special customer.
Meet Henry Marshall: Much more than a homicide victim
“You didn’t even have to see him, I’d hear him come in…’Buenos Dias!…Hola Jose…Estelle’…you know? And he knew all the staff,” Marshall’s friend Deen Warren said.
Manager Jose Hernandez said he used to show Marshall through the same door as he was “one of the first customers everyday.”
Marshall was also a talented artist. He painted a portrait of a cook’s wife which is in place at the restaurant.
“To lose somebody like this in such a senseless, horrific brutal fashion…it puts it on another level”, Warran said. He always ate and chatted with Marshall everyday to catch up with one another — touching on a range of topics in fruitful conversations.
“Every single day we would talk about everything, you know, life in Palm Springs, travel, what we did,” Warren added.
Marshall’s love of art, and his love for John’s Restaurant was evident in his Facebook posts — an expression of his cheerful personality. Manager Jose Hernandez said Marshall was, “One of the best customers I’ve ever had in the restaurant…I still look up waiting for him to come through the door over there.”
A constant presence that will now be remembered through art and memories.
