Woman says alleged gunman took refuge in home during Coachella manhunt

The man accused of shooting a Riverside County sheriff’s deputy multiple times on Thursday reportedly hid inside a nearby home immediately after the shooting. The owner of the home talks exclusively to KESQ News Channel 3 and CBS Local 2 about what happened and what was going through her mind at the time.

The woman, only identified as Gloria to protect her identity, said her children were home and her husband was sleeping when she found 27-year-old Gildardo Davila outside of her garage door.

“The door was unlocked. I opened the door and I found him in here. He said he needed help because someone was after him and then he came in here.”

The woman lives roughly a block from where a the incident took place and said she was completely unaware of what had happened just down the street when she stumbled upon the stranger.

“When he first told me he needed help I thought someone was trying to kill him. So I felt bad for him. I thought ‘poor thing,’ but then he started talking about how he had a gun,” she said.

She said she now believes the man was Davila.

“My niece called me and said ‘did you hear what happened, someone dangerous is running away, someone shot an officer,'” Gloria said. “That’s when I thought maybe it was him, but he was already in here.”

Gloria said the man was inside her house for about an hour while her children were in another room and her husband slept.

“I never thought of calling police. I promised him I wouldn’t say anything. I told him I wasn’t interested in doing him harm if he didn’t do us harm,” Gloria said.

She said he offered her money to hide inside of her garage, but that she declined it. She said she gave him water and a change of clothes because Davila had defecated himself when he ran from the scene. Gloria eventually convinced him to leave. He did so by hopping over the fence in her backyard.

Gloria said she now wants nothing to do with the investigation and is living in fear of retaliation. The Sheriff’s Department said they are using any and all resources in the search.

Davila is considered armed and dangerous. If you see him, or know of his whereabouts, you should call 911 immediately.
