Palm Springs Police Department shares the risks of driving through barricaded wash areas

People are ignoring the barricades off of North Indian Canyon Drive signaling a closed road.

The road is still seeing the aftermath of rain on Friday and over the weekend brought in by Tropical Storm Kay.

The City of Palm Springs shared on Twitter that N. Indian Canyon Drive will remain closed for the rest of the day Monday, and they'll reevaluate in the coming days.

Water is still flowing into both lanes preventing many drivers from taking N. Indian Canyon Drive out to the I-10.

Over the weekend and throughout the day Monday, drivers decided to take their chances. Not heeding the City's warning and continuing to drive through the wash.

Several cars struggled to make their way through. They swerved their way past rocky, mud covered and flooded water.

Lt. Gustavo Araiza with the Palm Springs Police Department shares the penalties people could face for driving through barricaded wash areas.

"They could actually be fined for that. The fine is roughly about $240, in the same of fact that they also could incur a point against their records, so there's the possibility of their insurance going up," says Araiza.

Aside from failing to comply with the law, Lt. Araiza says safety is a priority.

"A lot of times, we've had incidents where people have failed to obey those traffic control devices and actually have gone out and found themselves either stuck or in a situation where they needed help from law enforcement," says Araiza.

Although it may appear to just be an inch of moving water Araiza says there could be some flooding in the area and drivers may find themselves in a hole.
