Fourth of July dangerous for pets

The Fourth of July is one of the most dangerous times of the years for animals.

With the loud booms of fireworks dogs especially can be spooked easily. Animal officials recommend putting on music or turning on the TV to drown out the sound of the fireworks.

“They have such an acute sense of hearing — up to six times stronger than a person. So people sometimes like to bring the dog out to the celebration — not a good idea. They can spook. It can damage their hearing,” said Tom Snyder the CEO of Animal Samaritans.

Snyder also said to make sure your pet has a microchip and that microchip is registered.

“First thing that someone will do, if they pick up the pet, they’ll take them to a shelter to have them scanned to see if they have that microchip. And that microchip is really important because it has your name, your phone number, your email, address. It’s the fastest way you get your dog or cat back,” Snyder said.

Animal Samaritans is offering microchip specials every Monday. Micro-chipping usually costs $25 but on Mondays the organization is offering it for $15.
