Child killed in Chiriaco Summit rollover; no seatbelts on 4 thrown from van
A child has died in a rollover crash on the I-10 freeway in Chiriaco Summit early Wednesday morning.
We’ve learned 10-year-old Delawrence Grant III died in a crash two miles west of the Summit Road exit of the I-10, close to the General Patton Memorial Museum.
According to CHP, the call of the accident happened just after 12:30 Wednesday morning. A 2016 Dodge Caravan was found rolled over in the center divider.
Four people were thrown from a Dodge van and a child died at the scene. Officials say the four people who were ejected were not wearing seatbelts.
CHP also says that the van was carrying eight people, but was designed to seat only seven.
A 44-year-old female, a 16-year-old boy, and a 9-year-old boy were also seriously hurt. They were rushed to area hospitals.
Two other people had minor injuries; two were unhurt.
Officials say the driver is a 67-year-old man from Tarzana. CHP investigators say the van traveled into the center divider where the driver lost control of the vehicle. It then overturned.

Cal Fire was dispatched and air ambulances were called. Two people were airlifted to the hospital, while three other were transported by ground ambulance. Two tow trucks were also called to the scene as well as the coroner’s office.
One eastbound lane of the I-10 was shut down due to the accident but was back open by 4:30 a.m.
The cause of the wreck is still under investigation, but officials do not believe alcohol or drugs to be a factor in the crash.
