Boys & Girls Clubs of Coachella Valley to transfer operations of DHS facility

As part of a joint plan, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Coachella Valley will turn over management of the Desert Hot Springs facility to Borrego Health, which currently operates a clinic at the same city-owned site, according to officials with the Boys & Girls Clubs.

The two organizations plan a seamless transition for the more than 1,700 children and their families who are served by after-school and summer programs emphasizing volunteerism, college readiness, character development, the arts, nutrition, and sports and fitness.

Borrego Health will continue similar programs and services, such as summer lunches, childcare and transportation, at the 25,000-square-foot Cholla Drive building owned by the City of Desert Hot Springs.

“We are excited by this opportunity to expand our facilities and programs to further serve the Desert Hot Springs community,” said Bruce Hebets, Chief Executive Officer, of Borrego Health, which provides medical and dental services, operates clinics and mobile care units, and runs preventive health programs across Riverside and San Diego counties and in the city of San Bernardino, officials said in a release.

The Boys and Girls Clubs of Coachella Valley opened the Desert Hot Springs clubhouse in December 2012, as part of the city’s newly built Health and Wellness Center. On August 28, the clubhouse will close for a week of maintenance and reopen September 5 as Borrego’s recreation facility in Desert Hot Springs.

“The Boys and Girls Clubs of Coachella Valley has carefully considered this change in direction and leadership at the Desert Hot Springs Club. It presents a win-win for all parties and a new opportunity for the community of Desert Hot Springs,” said Quinton Egson, Chief Professional Officer for Boys and Girls Clubs of Coachella Valley.

The City of Desert Hot Springs was instrumental in guiding the transition, according to B&G officials.

“The Boys and Girls Club has done an outstanding job supporting our children. The City is pleased that another organization is willing to continue providing quality programs for at-risk youth and further the mission of the Desert Hot Spring Health and Wellness Foundation,” City Manager Chuck Maynard said.
