Wily seal that cruised to pond surrenders at police station

BEVERLY, Mass. (AP) — A wayward seal that made its home in a Massachusetts pond has surrendered to police after initially evading attempts to capture it. The aquatic mammal showed up in Shoe Pond in the city of Beverly earlier this month after evidently traveling there by river and drainage pipe. Firefighters and wildlife experts tried to capture the wily seal on Thursday without success. Early Friday morning, however, the animal left Shoe Pond, crossed a parking lot and appeared at the side door of the police station, where it was quickly corralled. The seal, nicknamed “Shoebert” after its chosen pond, was taken to Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut. Authorities say Shoebert appeared healthy, though a bit “sassy,” during the capture.
