10 adults & 3 children out of home after structure fire spreads in Indio

Firefighters were called to a residential structure fire reported in the 80-000 block of Avenue 42 in Indio Wednesday afternoon. When fire crews arrived, a single-story home was fully engulfed in flames. Fire officials said the fire spread to another property and ended up damaging the home and completely destroying two trailers; one on each property. The fire ignited shortly after 2 p.m.

Cal Fire officials said the fire originated from a single-wide, single family dwelling and caused damage to two adjacent residences. The American Red Cross has been requested to assist ten adults and three children displaced from all three residences.

KESQ News Channel 3 and CBS Local 2’s Joe Galli learned the owner of the home is an elderly man and he wasn’t home when the fire ignited. Neighbors said they were able to rescue the man’s small dog that was trapped by the flames.

Neighbors said they believe homeless people were living in the trailer which initially caught fire, spreading to the home and the other property. They said the same trailer caught fire three years ago and the property became a neighborhood eyesore as people were using it to dump off various items.

“There is always people coming in and out of that little trailer in the middle of the night sometimes. Police have been called here multiple times and they just keep coming back,” said Pedro Lara, a neighbor.

Red Cross was available to help the people who were displaced.

According to Cal Fire officials, nobody was evacuated during the fire.

Police were at the scene interviewing people who may have been living in the trailer that caught fire. KESQ News Channel 3 and CBS Local 2 is continuing to look into the fire investigation. We’ll have updates for you through the evening as authorities get back to us.
