Palm Springs International Film Festival hosts special screenings for local students

The 35th annual Palm Springs International Film Festival is in its final days and organizers are hosting some special screenings for valley students.

"I actually do want to work in film, but more in a creative aspect I would like to do maybe as animation and films," said Sophia Alejandre, an Indio High School student.

For students like Alejandre, attending PSIFF's student screening is a highlight of their high school experience.

"It's a great idea for students to be able to interact with filmmakers and people in the industry," said Anthony Martinez, an Indio High School student.

The program is a part of the festival’s educational outreach that’s been partnering with valley schools for more than 15 years.

"An idea of what they can do in the film world too, because we have Q and A's with the directors and the subjects of the film's sometimes producers, cast and other crew," Jennifer Van Camp, PSIFF education coordinator.

Festival organizers hope these screenings inspire students to pursue filmmaking in a variety of capacities.

"I hope to learn a lot from this and like put in my future career of journalism," Martinez said.

"I do want to thank the leadership of the chairman of the Palm Springs International Festival, Nachhattar Chandi, for his vision for his belief in our students here in the valley, and making sure that they have accessibility to wonderful programs like this, where they can be exposed and encouraged to pursue their film and media interests," Edwin Gomez, Riverside County Superintendent of Schools.

More than a dozen valley high schools, along with Yucca Valley, are participating in this year’s student screenings.

"So many teachers were excited that we were bringing it back because again, we haven't had it since 2020," Van Camp said.
