Palm Springs Church To Remember Parishioner Killed On 9/11

More than 300 churchgoers, residents and students will attend a prayer and memorial service in Palm Springs Thursday in memory of Barbara Keating, who died aboard one of the planes hijacked by terrorists on Sept. 11, 2001.

The service will also honor all victims of the terrorist attacks, but particularly Keating, a Palm Springs resident and volunteer/parishioner at St. Theresa Church and School. Keating was on her way back to Palm Springs on Sept. 11, 2001, after spending time in Cape Cod.

She was aboard American Airlines flight 11 from Boston to Los Angeles. The plane was hijacked by terrorists, who crashed the plane into the North Tower of the World Trade Center.

Thursday morning’s ceremony will be held at the campus, and the school’s 330 students will attend, according to the school’s Marie Weigel.

“We make a point every year to remember this tragedy,” said school principal Cheryl Corey. “Our older children remember seeing the events of 9-11 and we lost a wonderful person in church and the community who we all miss to this day and vow never to forget. A tragedy of that level has touched us personally here at the school and church.”
