Former Olympian And Palm Springs High School Teacher Honored

PALM SPRINGS – A former olympian and valley resident was honored today for his activism and commitment to the fight against racism.

Amural was unveiled Saturdaymorning at Palm Springs High School, commemorating John Carlos’s civil rights protest at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics.

Carlos is now a Palm Springs High School staff member.

He won the bronze medal in the 200 meter event at the ’68 games.

During the victory ceremony he raised his fist in protest against racism and economic depression.

Four students from the Ramon Alternative Center painted the mural, which is on a building near the Palm Springs High School track.
