KESQ Helps Adopt The Nation’s First Regional Early Warning System
“Standalone earthquake warning has been shown to be practical and reliable,” states a CREWS outline of the project. “A network of these devices can provide regional as well as local protection.”
Their goal is to have the network operational in schools and first responder centers within the next 18-to-24 months to give students and staff an advance warning of an on-coming earthquake. In all, CREWS hopes to have all of the Coachella Valley school districts involved, and approximately 120 networked sites in the area.
At Friday’s meeting of the Coachella Valley Association of Governments, CREW’s project partner “The Coachella Valley Emergency Managers Association” outlined their goals to putting these devices in schools, first responder locations, and KESQ-TV, and urged CVAG to join the partnership. Essentially, that could lead to early warning systems in city halls throughout the Coachella Valley.
CVAG’s next step will be to take this action item to the executive committee for their December 7 meeting for final approval.
