County Lifts Burn Restrictions And Reopens Hiking Spots

RIVERSIDE -Riverside County Fire Chief John Hawkins today lifted restrictions on open burning in unincorporated areas and reopened hiking spots previously closed because of fire danger.

In July, Hawkins ordered a ban on private burning activities related to debris disposal, citing the “acute dryness” of vegetation across the county and the increased likelihood of wildfires.

According to fire officials, the ban was lifted at 8 a.m., and residents in unincorporated communities can once again apply for outdoor burning permits.

The chief also rescinded prohibitions against people hiking and operating off-road vehicles in seven recreational areas that the Board of Supervisors authorized Hawkins to close June 2 because of fire danger.

The following locations are now open:

* Avery Canyon in southeast Hemet* Indian Canyon and North Mountain in San Jacinto* Lakeview area, east of Menifee Road and San Jacinto Avenue in Nuevo* Minto Way in Sage, north of Aguanga;* Ramona Bowl and Bautista Canyon in southeast Hemet* Reinhardt Canyon, north of Highway 74 and California Avenue in Hemet;* Whitewater Canyon in Cabazon.

The closure signs warning trespassers of fines and other penalties will be coming down, fire officials said.
