CCHS Delivers Holiday Cheer To 41 Needy Families

CATHEDRAL CITY – Kenia Castro knocks on the door.

“Hi, we’re from Adopt-a-Family!”

Christmas came early truly for Noemi Elizalde, who woke up Wednesday morning with three big boxes waiting for her to open.

“Oh, she’s gonna love this!,” exclaimed Noemi, as she held up a doll intended for her daughter.

The mother of five now is rejoicing. She knows her prayers have been answered and that her kids will have presents under the tree after all.

“It’s gonna come, it’s gonna come,” she said. “No matter what, you’re going tohave your little presents.”

Cathedral City High School students collected these presents over a two-week period. They came in droves to the school’s parking lot bearing gifts.

The 41 lucky families identified only by number.

The students, along with eleven drivers from Home Depot, mapping their way to spread some holiday cheer.

The Adop-a-Family effort began in 1991. Fast forward 18 years later, Cathedral City High School will have served more than 700 families.

Silvia Perez says times are hard for her, too. She’s part-time student, part-time worker, and full-time mother of four.

She says the two boxes of food at her doorstep will last her a couple of months — and save her at least $200.

Cathedral City’s five elementary schools nominated these families. School staff know quite well whichfamilies need a little help this holiday season…and knowing everyone ends up feeling good.

“Ifeel very fortunate. I do,” says student Maricela Lupercio, who helped deliver goods for the first time. “And fortunate enough to help these people.
