PALM SPRINGS -The Palm Springs City Council will consider today approving plans for a proposed $7.2 million animal shelter.
The proposed 20,730-square-foot shelter — about three times the size of the current facility, which was built 50 years ago — aims to ease overcrowding, provide a less-stressful environment for animals and increase adoptions, according to a city staff report.
It would be located on the corner of Vella Road and Mesquite Avenue and provide around 65 walk-in kennel runs for dogs, up from 23 at the existing shelter.
The proposed shelter will also give cats more space and an open area to exercise, as well as provide an area for animals to interact with families looking to adopt.
If the plans are approved, construction could begin in March, according to the report.
The city is around $1,660,000 short of meeting the projected costs of the facility.
Around $5 million in Redevelopment Bond Proceeds have been set aside for the project. About $550,000 has been raised by the Friends of the Animal Shelter and $13,529 has been offered in a grant from Southern California Edison because of the building’s energy efficient design.
The city hopes to fill the gap in funds with additional fund raising by the Friends of the Animal Shelter and a low construction bid, the report states.
