Economy Takes Toll On Local Theatre

PALM DESERT – The Joslyn Center Board of Directors tells News Channel 3 that the Arthur Newman Theatre will close for the season after the final presentation of “Back to Bachrach and Hal David” on Sunday, January 24.

The final two shows for the season originally scheduled for runs in February through April, “The Sisters Rosenzweig” and “The Prisoner of 2nd Avenue,” will not be produced.

“Deciding to close the Theatre at this time was a difficult decision, but one we felt necessary because of the down economy, and in the best interest of our members and stakeholders,” says Doug Morin, President, Board of Directors, The Joslyn Center. “We thank the many loyal patrons of the Theatre for their support throughout the years, and we look forward to re-opening next year as a new and exciting entertainment venue.”

While the Theatre is closed, Joslyn management, the Board of Directors, and Gina Bikales, the Arthur Newman Theatre Manager, will develop a new vision for the venue to include more varied entertainment offerings to enhance and broaden audience interest. Residents are encouraged to drop by the Joslyn Center and submit their entertainment ideas in the lobby Suggestion Box. Next season’s schedule for The Arthur Newman Theatre will be announced when finalized.

“We have had many, many excellent productions, and discovered extraordinary local talent in the process,” says Bikales. “As we move forward, we’re looking forward to expanding our reach and producing an even wider selection of entertainment options for our supporters and Coachella Valley residents.”

Ticketholders for the cancelled productions can obtain refunds by calling 760-340-3220.
