Palm Springs Tram Gets Ready For Snow

KESQ.com News Services

PALM SPRINGS -Up to four feet of snow could fall on Mount San Jacinto next week, which could draw more traffic to the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, a tram spokeswoman said.

The first of several large storms is expected to reach Riverside County Sunday, and could dump as much as three inches of rain over the Coachella Valley, and snow on the mountain, according to the National Weather Service.

More rain and snow is forecast throughout the week, and tramway visitors were urged to dress warmly.

“Dress accordingly if it’s cold,” said tramway spokeswoman Lena Zimmerschied. “You definitely want to wear coats and hats and gloves. It’s better to bring too much than not enough to wear.”

The mountain is already under about 9 inches of powder.

“If we get new snow, we’ll restart renting out cross-country skis,” Zimmerschied said.

The tram’s mountain station is currently renting out only snow shoes.

The tramway will extend its hours over the holiday weekend, from 8 a.m. to 9:45 p.m.
