Mecca Homes Hit By Floodwaters

MECCA -Eight homes on Fifth Street were evacuated around 9:45 a.m. because of flooding, said Jody Hagemann of the Riverside County Fire Department.

The American Red Cross was helping about 40 people find shelter, according to Hagemann.

Around 8 a.m., firefighters placed sandbags around the homes to protect them from the water, and the California Highway Patrol closed Fifth Street between Lincoln and Cahuilla streets.

Motorists and pedestrians were urged to obey the road closures, Hagemann said.
