Barbara Boxer Declares Candidacy For Senate

RIVERSIDE -Senator Barbara Boxer arrived at the Riverside County Registrar of Voters Thursday morning to file papers — officially putting her name on the ballot for re-election and kicking-off her campaign.

“I only have one goal — to get California back on track by creating jobs and making life better for the people I represent,” said Boxer, a Rancho Mirage resident.

Boxer has spent 18 years in the U.S. Senate. Many believe with voter sentiment turning against incumbents, keeping her seat is no slam-dunk.

“I’ve run for office many, many times. I’ve won ten in a row. Many were very difficult. The pundits said ‘Boxer won’t win, she doesn’t have a chance’,” said Boxer.

Republicans are bolstered by poll numbers showing Boxer with a slim lead.

Would-be challenger Carly Fiorina made a stop in the Coachella Valley Thursday, speaking to the Lincoln Club in Palm Desert.

The former Hewlett-Packard CEO touched on her battle with cancer as she delivered some fighting words.

“It is true that after chemotherapy, Barbara Boxer doesn’t scare me a bit,” said Fiorina, much to the delight of the conservative crowd.

Fiorina is also running against former Representative Tom Campbell and Assemblyman Chuck DeVore for the Republican nomination.

She highlighted lost jobs in California, record spending in Washington and fired more shots at Boxer.

“Ladies and gentlemen, it is time for Barbara Boxer to go, because she is a failed senator and I can beat her.”

“Whoever says this election is about me doesn’t understand elections,” said Boxer. “It’s about the people of California, their hopes and dreams. Who’s going to be on their side.”
