L.A. City Workers Get Stuck In River

LOS ANGELES -A stakebed truck got stuck in the fast-flowing Los Angeles River east of downtown this afternoon, but the three occupants escaped injury and were escorted to safety.

Firefighters were called at 2:16 p.m. as the driver was apparently trying to traverse the riverbed, said Lauren deRosier of the city fire department.

A decision was made to rescue the men out the rear of the truck because if they had gotten out of the cab, they could have been swept downstream or underneath the vehicle, deRosier said.

He said the water was about a foot deep in the river, but the truck got stuck in the middle along where a deeper channel runs.

A safety line was thrown to the truck and used to pull the men out.
