New Technology Helps People Wiggle Fat Away

PALM DESERT -A machine originally designed for astronauts is now becoming a hit here on earth, in the world of fitness.

Whole Body Vibration, or WBV, was created to decrease muscle and of bone loss while in space, but after years of research it’s proven to do a lot more. Now, people are lining up to reap big benefits without doing much work.

They’re shaking their way to a fit, flexible, healthier body.

“I feel lighter, I walk lighter,” says George Conkwright, fan of WBV.

“My clothes fit different, my butt is lifting, things are getting tight,” says Jennifer Beron, fan of WBV.

All of these results, without moving a muscle.

“Your muscles are moving passively,” says Shannon Phillipson, owner of Dangerous Curves by Vibration, in Palm Desert. “The machine is moving you, you’re not moving.”

WBV is a fast growing health trend.

“You become addicted,” says Beron.

People say the machine vibrates away inches and aliments.

“It gets the circulation going, everything is looser,” says Phillipson.

All you do is stand on the vibration platform, choose a level, and the ten minutes session begins.

“You can feel your muscles contracting,” says Beron.

Beron started WBV about a year ago. At first, she was skeptical, but now she’s a believer.

“I’ve noticed a difference around my love handles, I always had a hard time there and with this machine I’ve noticed a difference,” says Beron.

WBV does a lot more than tighten and tone. Phillipson says it also improves energy, mood, posture and balance while increasing muscle tone, bone structure and flexibility.

“You walk different and stand different, you’re body can do what it’s meant to do,” says Phillipson.

A few months ago, George Conkwright walked with a limp and suffered pain after knee surgery. He says the vibrations healed him.

“I have less pain, more mobility, no limp,” says Conkwright.

He says he’s stronger and more limber, and hasn’t done much more than stand and hold on.

“this machine is a major part of my health,” says Conkwright.

Most people do the vibration treatment three times a week for ten minutes at a time. Although it might not sound like much, phillipson says 10 minutes on the WBV machine, equals 30 minutes on a treadmill.

“It’ll take a 6th of the time that it would take in the gym for your muscles to get toned,” says Phillipson.

If you can get fit and toned by simply standing on a machine, why would anyone go to an actual gym where people are running, lifting and pushing themselves to the limit? Can the vibration machine really do the same thing as the gym?

“No,” says Certified Personal Trainer, Mike Brown. “To me, it’s just another fad, another gimmick. What it comes down to is hard work and sweat.”

Although the ease of vibration treatment sounds good, most doubt the results are.

“It takes a combination of cardiovascular and resistance training to see results,” says Brown.

Brown says you have to sweat, get your heart rate up and lift weights for total fitness.

“The harder you work, the better the benefits will be,” says Brown.

Phillipson actually agrees, she says body vibration is best as a supplement to an active lifestyle.

However, in today’s sedentary society, she says many clients come in admitting they want results without work.

“They say that they are lazy and not going to walk or do anything. They tell me, if the machine works, they’ll come in for 10 minutes a day,” says Phillipson.

Some say, 10 minutes is enough to wiggle away, at least a little, of that extra wiggle.

“You could workout for years and not get that last area, this helps and tones,” says Beron.
