Easter Quake Shakes Residents Into Action
The big jolt on Easter Sunday is still on the minds of many valley residents. Some said it knocked them into action, causing them to start preparing for the “big one.” On Saturday, plans were put into action as the City of Rancho Mirage put on an earthquake preparedness expo.
The earthquake shook up emotions and concerns, reminding residents of what can and does happen in the valley.
“The floor was moving,” said Laura Nelson, a Rancho Mirage resident.
The 7.2-magnitude quake that hit Mexicali and rattled the desert last Sunday served as a wake up call for many people.
“Everyone was surprised. We didn’t know what to do,” said Richard Imber, Rancho Mirage resident. “We weren’t prepared at all.”
The earthquake preparedness expo in Ranch Mirage taught residents what to do before, during and after a major quake.
“If you take preventative measures you’ll be better prepared to deal with the outcome of a quake,” said Fred Sanchez, Rancho Mirage emergency coordinator.
At the expo preparing was made easy. There were all kinds of survival kits with everything you’d need in case of an emergency. Most contained several days worth of food, water and supplies zipped up in a backpack or carrying case.
“I want to get everything in order and get prepared,” said Nelson.
Experts said when the big one hits it will be up to you to save yourself.
“We don’t have the resources, manpower of the equipment. Please take the steps to prepare yourself,” said Morgan.
