Coachella Valley Unified Ready To Vote On Layoffs

The Coachella Valley Unified School District is set to announce potential layoffs at its school board meeting.

Forty-seven positions are at stake in tonight?s vote.

Wednesday, teachers in the Palm Springs Unified School District prepared for pink slips.

As KESQ.com reported, that board unanimously approved sending final layoff notices to 36 teachers at a meeting Tuesday night.

If any teachers leave or take early retirement, some of the notices could be rescinded.

Last week, the Desert Sands Unified approved layoff notices for 150 positions, and on tonight, Coachella Valley Unified will vote on cutting 47 teacher positions.

CVUSD has delayed the layoff vote before.

They were waiting to see how much the district stands to lose in the upcoming school year, and that amount now stands somewhere between $14 million and $15 million.

By law, districts have to send out layoff notices by May 15th which is Saturday.

The three districts have sent out hundreds of pink slips over the last couple years, but were able to rescind most of them before the start of classes.
