Grandmother Explains How She Saved Drowning Grandson

At 11am, Tuesday, a drowning call came into authorities from the 100 block of Shorline Drive in Rancho Mirage.

A grandmother tells News Channel 3 she was watching the toddler, and took her eye off of him for just a matter of moments.

“He was right there in the shallow part,” recalls Sedik Aghaian as she recalls her grandson’s lifeless body in the pool.

“As soon as I saw him he was in the water,” she said. “I jumped in and tried to get him out.”

Her grandson who is almost 2 and was able to get a heavy sliding glass door open by using his weight as leverage.

“I tried to push him towards me while I was walking out of the pool to get water out of him out of his belly,” she recalls.

Thanks to the quick thinking of the grandmother and the boy’s dad who knew CPR from the military, the boy was breathing when paramedics rushed him to Eisenhower Medical Center.

A is for adult supervision.

B is for a barrier between your child and the pool.

C is for classes, like CPR and first aid.

And remember drownings don’t just happen in the pool.

Sma toddlers are drawn to toilets, according to authorities. They stick their head in, and are so top heavy they fall in. Even if you’re mopping, they can drown in a bucket full of water.

The toddler’s family had the adult supervision and they knew CPR. They were missing B, a barrier.

They are fixing that problem immediately.

Wednesday, the toddler was reportedly doing fine while recovering at Eisenhower Medical Center.
