Earthquake Jolts Southern California Overnight
A small undersea earthquake has shaken the Santa Monica area.
The U.S. Geological survey says the 3.6-magnitude temblor struck at 2:17 a.m. PDT Monday and was centered about four miles west of Redondo Beach.
City News Service says the quake was widely felt across West Los Angeles, and could also be felt in downtown Los Angeles about 20 miles east.
Christopher Knight, a Scottsdale, Ariz., resident visiting in Marina del Ray, says he felt a jolt lasting about a second. “It was very short shift from left to right.”
Scientists say quakes of this magnitude can be felt but generally not strong enough to cause injury or damage.
The quake struck at a depth of about 8 miles.
