Fourth Of July Fireworks Show Will Go On In Palm Springs; Not Indio

Palm Springs will celebrate the Fourth of July with a fireworks show at the Palm Springs Stadium thanks to fundraising efforts of Mayor Steve Pougnet, the city announced today.

The city had planned to cancel this year’s fireworks display at the Palm Springs Stadium to help stave off a projected $7.7 million budget deficit.

Pougnet was able to raise the funds from private donors, said Amy Blaisdell, the city’s director of communications.

The mayor said he felt compelled to keep up the tradition.

“During these tough economic times, I felt it was particularly important to ensure the tradition continue, so I encourage everyone to break out their red, white and blue,” Pougnet said.

The July 4th activities will begin at 6:05 p.m. when the Palm Springs Power baseball team will play the Novato Nicks at the stadium, 1901 E. Baristo Road, Blaisdell said.

The fireworks show will begin at 9:15 p.m.

Meantime, in Indio, city leaders decided to cancel their 4th of July Fireworks.

The City says they will save over 50-thousand dollars to not hold the annual event at the Riverside County Fairgrounds this year.
