Valley Couple Hopes To Adopt Children Orphaned By Drug Violence

Nearly 23,000 people have been killed in drug gang violence in Mexico since a government crackdown on cartels in 2006.

Less than three weeks ago in Tijuana, gunmen shot an innocent couple, execution style, leaving behind the parents’ three young children.

Valley resident Jose Trejo and his wife are now trying to adopt the children — who happen to be their two nieces, ages 13 and 11 and a 9-year old nephew.

“We spoke to them two days ago. They keep asking us if we’re going to be able to bring them over, because they’re really scared to be over there,” said Trejo.

Trejo says grandparents have gone to Mexico to temporarily take care of the kids in another area. But he fears they’re still in danger.

“One of the neighbors called my wife and told her some people were looking for the kids. We don’t know who was looking for them. That concerned us a lot more,” said Trejo.

Trejo wants to get visas for the children — and start the adoption process. But that will take time and a lot of money.

Hearing his story, Trejo’s co-workers at Desert Oasis Healthcare got involved and put together a bake sale.

“We’re here to support each other. Something this tragic has touched everyone’s heart,” said co-worker Helene Leclair.

The bake sale raised nearly $5,000.

“We love those children. There isn’t anybody else that can take care of them. It’s family — we need to bring them and just be close to each other,” said Trejo.
