“Safe Ride Home” Program Offers Free Taxi Rides 4th of July Weekend

Two things we can expect to have this Fourth of July weekend: fireworks and alcohol.

Four local Coachella Valley taxi companies will provide customers with rides home from any bar, restaurant, or hotel to each passenger’s residence or final destination.

Passengers will not be picked up from a house party.

Rides are one way with a 15-mile limit and are not provided from one business (or bar) to another. Gratuity not included.

Local attorney and vehicle safety advocate Walter Clark initiated the “Safe Ride Home” taxi program in 2005 and has continued to offer the life-saving community service during designated holidays, when restaurant and bar patrons often find themselves celebrating more than expected, leading to driving under the influence (DUI).

Clark reimburses all of the participating taxi companies for the total cost incurred by the taxi companies who transport “Safe Ride Home” passengers.
