La Quinta Mother Delivers Triplets On July Fourth

A La Quinta mother rested easy Tuesday after celebrating the Fourth of July by giving birth to triplets.

The trio, all weighing over 5 pounds, was delivered at Desert Regional Medical Center where on Mother’s Day, quadruplets were born.

Between 250 and 300 babies are delivered each month at Desert Regional, and around 3,300 babies are delivered there each year, according to hospital officials.

“They were born on July 4 at 8:30 a.m., 8:31 a.m. and 8:31 a.m.,” said Rita Soto, a proud mother of triplets. “I had no problems. No high blood pressure. No diabetes. Everything went nice and smooth. That’s why I feel so fortunate.”

Soto is 42, and considering her age, the risk for complications were high, according to doctors.

“Advanced age… the fact that it was multiples,” she said.

But, all were born without a hiccup. Soto arrived at the hospital at 6 a.m. on July 4. Doctors performed a caesarian section, and the babies were born shortly after.

“Amazing,” said Paul Hackman, with Desert Regional Medical Center. “All three of them are boys and healthy and with the mom.”

A set of twins were born the same day, and on Mother’s Day, quadruplets were delivered at Desert Regional.

“According to the doctors,” said Hackman, “quadruplets come around only every so years.”

Soto’s oldest is Aiden-Conner. Ethan John is the middle child, and Emilio-Ramon is the youngest. Each has already developed their own personalities, according to Soto.

“I have the ladies man,” she said. “I have the cry baby and then I have a sleeper.”

A single mother, who already had a 2-year-old daughter, Soto didn’t plan on having three babies.

“I didn’t do in-vitro fertilization,” she explained. “I [stimulated] the production of eggs.”

She found out two months into the pregnancy that triplets were on the way, and thirty-seven weeks later on Independence Day, her life changed forever.

“Yup, I have my Yankee Dodle dandies,” Soto beamed.

Desert Regional Medical Center recently earned the distinction as a baby-friendly hospital by the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative — the only hospital in the Coachella Valley to earn that recognition.
