Second Brush Fire Erupts In Thermal

Firefighters were able to stop the forward spread of a brush fire in Thermal Monday afternoon, but not before it scorched nearly half an acre of land, according to Cal Fire crews.

The units that first arrived on the scene at Avenue 60 near Buchanan Street reported two large debris piles burning quickly, and they feared it could ignite more dry brush in the area.

Fire crews said they were able to stop the forward spread of the fire at a quarter of an acre. They were still on the scene at 3:40 p.m., and were expected to be monitoring the area for several hours to make sure more land doesn’t catch fire.

A wildfire burned through 40 acres this weekend in Thermal. That fire was reported at 3:33 p.m. Saturday near Pierce Street and 69th Avenue, said Jody Hagemann of the Riverside County Fire Department.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
