Banning Airport Gets Federal Money For Weather, Navigation

The Banning Municipal Airport has been awarded a grant for $536,750 from the U.S. Department of Transportation to improve safety for pilots, according to a news release sent by airport officials.

The funds will be used for the installation of an automated weather observing system and improvements geared to help pilots navigate better.

Among the list of improvements, a rotating beacon at the airport will be replaced and a segmented circle and wind cone will be relocated.

The notice issuing the grant said the beacon has reached the end of its service life and the other equipment is being relocated because the segmented circle, in its current location, is difficult for pilots to see, and the wind cone is within the taxiway area.
