750 Acre Wildfire Threatens Homes, Residents Evacuated

Residents near the Kern County brush fire in Lebec were evacuated from their homes as the blaze threatened about 20 structures.

The fire broke out on the west side of the 5 Freeway near Lebec Road at about 12:15 p.m. Tuesday.

Approximately 155 firefighters and several aircraft were on scene battling the blaze.

The fire had burned 750 acres by 3 p.m.

An evacuation center was established at Frazier Mountain High School at 700 Falcon Way in Lebec.

Kern County Fire Department officials said the fire was fuel-driven, with west wind and triple-digit temperatures adding to the conditions. The fire was dubbed the “Lebec Fire” by officials.

No injuries were reported.
