50 Top Readers Honored In La Quinta

Fifty of the Coachella Valley’s top young readers will be honored today for their participation in a Boys and Girls Club reading program.

The Boys and Girls Club of the Coachella Valley will recognize the youths who participated in its Top 50 Readers program at an 11:30 a.m. luncheon at the La Quinta Senior Center.

Among those who will honored include 9-year-old Kevin Patrida, the program’s top reader, Boys and Girls Club spokeswoman Carolyn Moloshco said. He logged 52 reading hours.

La Quinta Mayor Don Adolph will introduce the honorees.

The program was established in the early 1990s as part of an effort to keep kids reading during the summer for a minimum of 15 minutes each day.

About 250 children joined the program.

Each of the top 50 students will receive a backpack containing school supplies, according to Moloshco.
